Catherine Freeman, OAM, is one of Australia's most admired and respected athletes. She is an Australian superstar and an Australian icon and she was born to run. As a young girl, Cathy began to dream about being one of Australia’s greatest female athletes, and becoming an Olympic champion.
She has not been an overnight success, but rather Catherine has achieved her goals through hard work, commitment and natural talent becoming a world-class athlete and winning the ultimate prize in any sport - an Olympic gold medal.
In 1990 her dream became a reality when she won a gold medal in the 4×100m relay at the Auckland Commonwealth Games. She became the first female Australian Aboriginal to win a gold medal at an international athletic event. Her extraordinary 400m run at the 2000 Sydney Olympics was watched by millions of Australians and remains one of this country’s most-defining sporting glories. Catherine also had the honour of lighting the Olympic flame at the 2000 Sydney games.
